On a single auspicious wedding mahurat in late 2012, Mumbai celebrated around 30,000 weddings in one day, and The Times of India estimated that more than Rs 1,000 crore changed hands. WedEazzy's Rupali Goshalia was among the wedding professionals the paper spoke to.
What the article covered
The Times City report described a city working flat out. Wedding planners, caterers, decorators, florists, henna artists, priests and bands were all juggling several venues at once, with some rushing across the city to serve multiple ceremonies on the same day.
The paper also looked at how the Indian wedding has grown. Celebrations that were once a single ceremony now commonly stretch over three to four days, with mehndi, sangeet and cocktail evenings becoming the norm across communities.
Costs varied enormously, from modest community halls to premium banquets, and from affordable catering to high-end menus. The takeaway: families at every budget have good options, provided they plan and book in time.
Rupali's view
Even as an experienced wedding planner, Rupali was surprised by the scale of spending in a single day, and shared a refreshingly down-to-earth view of her own.
I myself advocate a simple, registered wedding to my relatives but no one listens. Rupali Goshalia, quoted in The Times of India
